Why does my pet need a cardiologist?

Your veterinarian may recommend a cardiologist if he or she suspects heart disease, commonly, a heart murmur or an irregular heart rhythm. A history of coughing, difficulty breathing, weakness, collapsing, or exercise intolerance can also be associated with heart disease or congestive heart failure.

Why does my pet need an echocardiogram?

Echocardiography is an ultrasound of the heart. This is one of the most important tools in diagnosing heart disease. It is an non-invasive test which allows the cardiologist to evaluate heart structure and function. This test is performed by having the patient gently placed on their side and takes around 15-25 minutes. There is rarely a need to shave any fur, or sedate, and it is not painful.  The gold standard in vet medicine, as well as in pediatrics, is to have an echocardiogram performed by a board-certified cardiologist.

What happens during an appointment?

During your pet's appointment, Dr. Keegan will complete a cardiac physical examination and review any medical records. An echocardiogram and an EKG will be performed.  A report with the results and treatment recommendations will be provided to you and your veterinarian.  All findings, prognosis, and treatment will be explained.  Any questions will be answered.

What should I do in case of an emergency?

Please contact or go to your veterinarian or the nearest emergency clinic immediately. We will make every effort to consult on these cases if requested. If you are not sure if your pet is having an emergency or if your veterinarian is not available, please contact your nearest veterinary emergency clinic.
